SURVIVOR bosses are scrambling behind the scenes after a wave of fan backlash over singer Zac Brown’s headline-grabbing appearance on the milestone 50th season.
The CBS series, which typically focuses on a group of castaways who much outwit, outplay, and outlast each other in the cutthroat game, has given more screentime to the country star than it has to some of Season 50‘s contestants.
An insider exclusively told The U.S. Sun that production is already making edits to upcoming episodes in response to the mass outrage over the show’s increasing reliance on celebrity cameos this season.
“Production has seen the backlash and they stand by their decisions made to make this a superstar, supersized season.
“That being said, they don’t want to alienate the fanbase. They are hearing everyone out.
“And did decide that they would cut down some of the future cameo edits, mostly Mr. Beast. It’s pretty last minute to make cuts but not too late,” the source said.
Viewers were quick to slam the show after Zac Brown dominated large portions of a recent episode – a move many argued took valuable screen time away from actual contestants.
Social media erupted within minutes of the episode airing, with longtime fans accusing the show of “losing its identity.”
One viewer wrote: “Why is Zac Brown getting more confessionals than the castaways?? This is ridiculous.”
Another fumed: “I didn’t wait 50 seasons for this to turn into a celebrity cameo fest.”
A third added: “This isn’t Survivor anymore. It’s just promo for famous people.”
Others specifically called out the imbalance in editing.
“Half the episode was Zac Brown content. Meanwhile I don’t even know half the tribe’s names,” one fan posted.
Survivor alums also chimed in agreeing with the viewers, with some even making meme’s of Zac’s appearance – which took up nearly 30 mins of the episode.
According to the insider, producers are now actively trimming future celebrity segments, with YouTube megastar MrBeast among those most affected.
“They’re trying to strike a balance. The idea was to make this season feel huge, but they’re realizing they may have pushed it too far.”
Survivor’s milestone season was designed as a “celebration of pop culture and legacy,” blending iconic gameplay with major celebrity crossovers.
Zac, a longtime fan of the show, was brought in as part of a special twist that included mentoring elements and themed challenges tied to music and endurance.
The winning tribe of the award challenge he was a part of would get to spend an afternoon on a private beach listening to the crooner belt out his hits while enjoying food he caught himself.
A large portion of the episode focused on Zac’s spearfishing segment – while some fan-favorites such as Tiffany Ervin didn’t get a single confessional despite making a series of impactful moves in the game.
Producers also viewed his appearance as a way to draw in new viewers beyond the show’s core audience, but for many die-hard fans, the execution missed the mark.
Zac isn’t the only big name to appear this season.
Pop superstar Billie Eilish has made waves all season with the introduction of the “Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol,” a twist that allowed players to give an Idol to an opposing tribe member but reclaim it under specific conditions.
Meanwhile, late-night host Jimmy Fallon has also been involved in promotional segments and surprise appearances tied to challenges.
While some viewers appreciated the creativity, others felt the show veered too far from its roots.
One fan wrote: “Billie Eilish was fun for five minutes. But now it’s every episode with someone famous.”
Another added: “This is supposed to be about survival and strategy — not celebrity gimmicks.”
While one more quipped: “I never want to hear the phrase ‘Billie Eilish Boomerang Idol’ again in my life.”
Despite the backlash, insiders insist producers are not abandoning the concept entirely.
Instead, they’re aiming to recalibrate.
“They still believe in the vision,” the source said. “They just want to make sure the players remain the focus.”
With several episodes still to air, it remains to be seen whether the late-stage edits will be enough to win back skeptical fans – or if the “supersized” season has already gone too far.
