Charlie Davis has a gift for making people root for him. On season 46, he was the guy who got burned by someone he trusted, and the audience felt every bit of it. That sympathetic underdog energy followed him into Survivor 50, where he arrived not looking for a redemption arc exactly, but ready to play with a little more edge. The problem is that edge cuts both ways.
Davis was voted out in a blindside, the result of a move engineered largely by Rizzo Velovic, the season 49 player whose entry into the game Davis had been quietly working to cut short. When Valladares and Kamilla Karthigesu flipped, it was over. “I just did not expect Dee and Kamilla to flip,” Davis said. “That was the bottom line for me. I did not see that coming whatsoever.”
What makes the exit sting a little more is the clarity Davis now has about the Velovic situation, information he simply didn’t have while he was still in the game. His case for targeting Velovic wasn’t purely emotional, even if the edit leaned into that angle. “That was not a dishonest portrayal,” he said, acknowledging the vendetta framing viewers saw on screen. But there was strategy underneath it. Velovic was an unknown quantity, someone none of the returnees had watched play before because he played on the most recently aired season. That unfamiliarity was a liability, and Davis figured the window to exploit it would close fast. “As soon as that unknown player becomes known, that reason for targeting them disappears,” he said. “You have to pounce on it early or it goes away.”
He also calculated that Velovic, coming in with fewer pregame relationships and alliances than everyone else, would be an easier vote with less political fallout. Clean hands before the merge. It was a sound enough read. What Davis didn’t know was that Velovic had been sent an idol, which he used to build real trust with Cirie Fields and Valladares. “That would have been nice to know,” Davis said, with what felt like considerable restraint.
As for his Survivor legacy, Davis was reflective in a way that felt genuinely hard-won rather than rehearsed. Making it to season 50 means something, even when the exit comes earlier than you wanted. “I feel very disappointed with how 50 went,” he said. “To not only not win, but to have a pretty early exit, that was tough.” But he also landed somewhere more grounded than regret. “You don’t want your personality to be your Survivor legacy,” he said. “There’s always going to be people who despise you and people who think you’re the greatest. You don’t need to pin your self-esteem on that.”
One of the more charming detours in the conversation was, inevitably, Taylor Swift. Davis became one of the more unexpected Swiftie ambassadors in Survivor history during season 46, and the topic has followed him into 50 like a very catchy chorus. He hasn’t met her yet, for the record, and was characteristically gracious about it: she was on the Eras Tour during his last season, she’s planning a wedding, she’s busy. But he made clear that a Swift acknowledgment would register as a personal life win, full stop, separate from anything Survivor-related. “Her music has been there through hard times and great times,” he said. “Friendships I’ve built through people being fans of hers. To meet the person behind all of those moments would be incredible.”
He also showed up to the exit interview with a new mustache, which, when gently pressed about this possibly being a sign of depression, he playfully suggested it could be grief-related. “I’m in mourning,” he said with a laugh. “I’m mourning for myself leaving Survivor.” Hard to argue with that logic.
